BIM Models for Solar Panels: Solarstone

We created parametric BIM models of Solarstone products for Revit and Archicad and added them to the ProdLib system.

Solarstone

An intelligent product catalog of ready-made solar panels, compatible with various design software like Revit and Archicad. The uniqueness of this project lies in the code-based, “intelligent” BIM models developed, which can recognize roof surfaces within the model and automatically generate a roof made of Solarstone products with precise dimensions.

This digital product was developed in collaboration between Wenture and Tulitec.

Client brief

Solarstone approached us to make their product more marketable. They noted that their solar panels are not installed on existing roofs at a later construction stage; instead, the roof is built from the panels themselves. Thus, they needed to reach architects earlier in the design process.

A potential solution was to allow architects to design roofs made of panels directly in their software, supporting smoother adoption later. Their goal was to create virtual copies, or digital twins, of their roofing panels for architects to use in the early planning stages of building projects.

Consultation

Through consultation, we determined that Solarstone first needed a digital product catalog to centralize all product information, such as panel dimensions, weight, and other parameters.

Additionally, the catalog needed to include all other design essentials, like PDFs, static and parametric 2D AutoCAD drawings, and certifications. The digital product catalog was designed to be compatible with Revit and Archicad design software.

Final Product

The project concluded in fall 2022 with a completed product catalog of roofing panels, available for architects during the building planning phase. By integrating the catalog with design software, architects can precisely calculate the number of roof panels needed and their optimal placement.

The models are designed to be so intelligent that users only need to define the solar panel and roof dimensions, and the rest is automated. Finally, a 3D model of the roof is created based on calculations, offering a quick overview of the aesthetic result. Architects can instantly see how even minor changes affect the building’s exterior, such as the visual impact of adding or removing trims. The solution was quickly embraced by architects.

Technical Solution

The project’s technical solution was built using BIM modeling. Building Information Modeling (BIM) allows for managing construction data and processes digitally, giving all parties—from material manufacturers to builders—an accurate, real-time overview across the construction lifecycle.

Additionally, BIM’s value lies in its 3D models, providing users with a visual representation of infrastructure, buildings, and components. The greatest benefit of BIM adoption is optimal resource utilization, saving on labor costs through faster communication processes, reducing errors, and enabling better anticipation of various construction scenarios, which saves on material costs and improves time management.
